TotalBoat Topside Primer Makes Topside Paint Look Better and Last Longer.

Use above the waterline on gelcoat, fiberglass, wood & previously painted surfaces

No one likes sitting around waiting for paint to dry, especially if they’re only at the priming stage. TotalBoat Topside Primer is a premium marine undercoat preferred for extremely fast dry times and high-solids, 1-coat coverage that sands easily to a smooth, fair surface ready for one-part topside paints—including TotalBoat Wet Edge, TotalTread non-skid deck paint, TotalBilge epoxy bilge paint & TotalGold paint for decorative detail work. Apply to properly prepared wood, gelcoat, fiberglass & previously painted surfaces in good condition. Use anywhere above the waterline. It’s important to note that our Topside Primer is “high-solids” not “high-build”. The difference is that a high-solids coating has great coverage & sealing properties in 1 coat, whereas a high-build primer allows increased application thickness to hide surface imperfections.

Tip: Keep in mind, it’s a primer, not a filler—we recommend applying one thin coat.

Because this is a high-solids primer, it’s designed to be applied thinly to seal the surface, not in thick coats to fill surface imperfections. A thick coat will not dry properly, and will gum up your sanding discs. Applying a thin coat of this fast-drying primer allows it to dry properly and makes it easy to sand, once cured. It also allows the cured primer to flex without lifting.

Available in White and Gray Colors

For best results, we recommend using white under lighter colors, and gray under darker colors.

Easy to apply by brush, roller, or sprayer.

Surface prep is the key to smooth, long-lasting results. A properly prepared surface is clean, solid, and dry. For best results, do not apply primer immediately after rain, during foggy weather, or when the temperature is below 50°F.

Use a 1/8″ solvent-safe foam roller or a firm polyester brush, for best results. Avoid lap marks by not priming in direct sunlight and by coating sections of the surface either down or across to natural breaks, maintaining a wet edge.

Our premium Topside Primer is easy to apply to properly prepared wood, fiberglass, gelcoat, or previously painted surfaces in good condition.

Thinning: When brushing or rolling, thin TotalBoat Topside Primer with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100. If spraying, thin with xylene, up to 15-20%.

Covers in a single coat and dries fast!

In most cases, just 1 thin coat of this unique primer’s high-solids formula provides the needed adhesive bond for topside paint finishes, even if full hide is not achieved. This makes the job easier because it means you’ll do far less sanding in order to get a fair surface ready for finish paint.

During application, if your wet edge begins to dry, or you see that you missed a spot and the primer’s already setting up, let it dry completely before touching up the area.

Tip: Do not apply primer too thickly or you’ll lose flexible adhesion characteristics that make TotalBoat Topside Primer one of the marine industry’s leading one-part undercoats. Dry Film Thickness (also known as DFT) should be 1-2 mils per coat.

Dry Time To Sand or Overcoat: 1 hour @ 90°F, 2 hours @ 70°F, 4 hours @ 50°F.

Can be applied below the waterline, but is not a barrier coat.

TotalBoat Topside Primer can be used to prime surfaces below the waterline, but it’s important to note that it’s not an epoxy barrier coat. To prevent osmotic blistering, use TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat and Primer or TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat prior to applying paint.

It all started simply enough. As boaters, we wanted better stuff for our own boats.

Even our favorite products, the ones we’d come to rely on, had room for improvement. It’d be nice if they could hold up longer, cure faster, coat better, apply easier, and—since we all know boat ownership creates a mini maelstrom in your pocket—cost less. So we took everything we knew from 35 years of customer feedback, combined that with our own boating knowledge, and after a few years of rigorous R&D, TotalBoat was born. Launched, rather. By boaters, for boaters.
